Tenuta Di Biserno

Biserno is set in western Tuscany, in the coastal area of the Upper Maremma. The estate lies among the hills of Bibbona. Previously unknown to wine production, it borders the DOC of Bolgheri. Biserno is unique, a dream for any winemaker. Reuniting the names Lodovico and Piero, the namesakes of the original founders of the Antinori Company.

'Biserno' In the best vintages, such as 2007 and 2008, Biserno is a wine of depth, intensity, complexity, longevity and elegance. A thought-provoking wine which reflects the terroir and the excellent microclimate of the coastal area of the Upper Maremma. The Blend is a balance of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a very small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

'Lodovico' named after Marchese Lodovico Antinori, one of the greatest minds when it comes to winemaking. 'Lodovico' represents the peak of the winery Tenuta di Biserno, and is only made and sold in the best years of production, so it was in 2007. Refined, with silky Burgundy structure, previously unseen in this area, the wine reveals a taste of liquid chocolate and light spice.

Biserno Extra Virgin Olive Oil. We make a very small amount of top quality extra virgin olive oil from our beautiful olive trees on the estate. We grow only the premium Tuscan varieties, Leccino, Frantoiano and Moraiolo, which ripen so perfectly in the Upper Maremma. The olives are pressed using the traditional cold-pressing method and only the first pressing goes into the Biserno oil. The pure, intense, spicy flavours are best enjoyed with the simplest foods - with bread, on tomato…

'Il Pino di Biserno' A careful blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Il Pino di Biserno is the second wine of the Biserno estate. The first vintage released was the 2004 and with every successive vintage the wine has improved dramatically. The 2006 vintage is the best expression to date of this extraordinary wine, which amply demonstrates the significant characteristics of the estate. The 2007 and 2008 vintages promise to continue advancing the reputation.

Grappa di Biserno - Reserve The Reserve Grappa is produced by distilling the marc of the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes from Tenuta di Biserno. Following distillation the different components are kept apart and tasted individually then the very best are carefully blended and aged in French oak barriques for 18 months. Deep amber in colour this Grappa has a spicy aroma and notes of liquorice and vanilla, characteristics which also feature in the refined and elegant palate.

The 'Relais il Biserno' is the guest house of the 'Tenuta di Biserno'. Opened in the spring of 2006, the Relais is an extraordinary place, combining the elegant simplicity of a Tuscan farmhouse, perched atop the hills of the Magona forest, with singular views sweeping over the 80 hectares of the estate vineyards, down to the lumnious blue water of the Mediterranean.

'Petit Verdot' This white Grappa is distilled from Petit Verdot grapes grown in the estate’s vineyards. In order to preserve the varietal aromas and characteristics, the marc is taken to the distillery immediately after being softly pressed. Crystal clear in appearance, this Grappa has an intense aroma reminiscent of herbs.

'Coronato' The wine bears the name Coronato after "Monte Coronato", the highest of the peaks rising directly behind the vineyard. A typical Bolgheri blend where Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant. The palate reveals hints of cassis, with delicate chocolate and spicy characteristics of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot usually prevail over the other varieties Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The tannic structure is firm while the fresh acidity helps to create an enormously pleasing balance.

In 'Ram’s Hill' we experience something totally different:  an oaked Sauvignon Blanc, which is creamy, rich, yet balanced by the perfect amount of citrus acidity. Matched with baked fish dishes such as salmon or monkfish, the weight and fruit of the wine stand up to the richness of the food. The acidity cuts through, bringing a lovely balance of textures and flavours. Ram’s Hil also makes an excellent and different accompaniment to mild Camembert or Cheddar.

'Mount Nelson' Sauvignon Blanc enjoys the best of both worlds - old and new. The wonderful rich Marlborough fruit is gently restrained by Lodovico and his winemaker, to display a delightful minerality with perfect structure. Such is the delicacy of Mount Nelson, it goes perfectly with Sushi, as well as the more classic pairings of seafood, particularly oysters.

'Baron Bornemisza Tokaji' is a very special wine which is rich rather than sweet and we only produce 3 to 4 outstanding vintages per decade. With its excellent acidity and lovely orangey, citrus tones, it is perfect with savoury delicacies such as foie gras, truffles and anchovy paste. In ‘after dinner’ terms, it particularly enhances fruit based desserts such as tarte tatin or raspberry mousse, or is a wonderful climax to a meal when simply drunk on its own.

'Insoglio del Cinghiale' is the foundation wine of the Bibbona estate. It is made from 32% Syrah and the remaining part is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Insoglio del Cinghiale is a very fleshy wine, coming from the distinctive Upper Maremma terroir. The peppery characteristics coming from the Syrah make it the ideal accompaniment to game dishes, such as the local wild boar (after which it is named), roast pheasant or rich game stews.
