I'm the biggest John Lennon fan there is, and I have tremendous respect for Lennon as an artist. But it's true: He was a violent man, and admitted as such openly. That's why he was so into peace. It was something (as someone given to aggression) he aspired to. That line in McCartney's song Getting Better, which goes "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved . . ." was written by Lennon.
