The Body Shop is my favorite brand for cosmetics. I buy their products not only because of their pure functionality, but also because using their beauty products, with their particular smell and texture, is an intrinsically rewarding experience for me. Furthermore, the brand is well-known for being against animal testing. Hence, by buying their products, I make a statement about myself: I communicate that I share the same ideals and values as The Body Shop.
The following necklace was a family gift. I’m attached to it not because of any functional aspect, but because it is linked to a specific period in my life, which has had a big impact on the person I am today. Thus, also the past is a part of my “Extended Self”, as it influenced the development of my identity. In addition, wearing this necklace reflects my desire of being identified as someone unique and distinctive. Therefore, this necklace helps me to express my individuality.
As I’m half German, I own a tricot of the German football team. Interestingly, when there is a match between Germany and Italy, I support the former team when I watch the game in Italy and viceversa. The theory of distinctiveness could help explaining my behavior: because of a desire of being different, I prefer supporting another team than the rest of the people who surround me. Therefore, the salience of my two cultural identities depends from the specific situation and environment.
This is my jacket of my Italian football team: Milan. When I wear it, I feel part of a bigger community, namely the one of Milan football fans. Hence, my jacket symbolizes a part of my social and cultural identity, as I'm half Italian.
