The analogy of Lucy and Charlie Brown is used to illustrate the pattern repeated in trauma bonds where people bond with their abusers. The abuser holds the football (some irresistible promise the abused person believes will heal their childhood wounds and stop their pain) the abused person wants so badly to believe it's true that time after time they trust, only to be abused again! There is recovery from trauma bonds and it is described in the book Betrayal Bond by Patrick Carnes
