Library of Light by Es Devlin in Milan Design Week
Salone del Mobile has commissioned a large-scale kinetic installation by British artist Es Devlin, with the contribution of Milan based publishing house, Feltrinelli. Set in the historic Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the installation draws inspiration from a quote by Umberto Eco: “Books are the compass of the mind.” Devlin’s piece is an 18-meter-wide rotating cylinder of glowing bookshelves holding 3,200 volumes, placed at the heart of the 17th-century Cortile d’Onore. By day, a mirrored surface atop the structure reflects sunlight into previously unlit areas of the courtyard. By night, the sculpture becomes a luminous centerpiece casting intricate shadows across the surrounding architecture.
