inspiring Olympic Moment: Madge Syers Competes With the Men Syers, a British figure skater, became the first woman to compete at the World Figure Skating Championships, in 1902, then an all-male event. When she entered the competition (and took home the silver medal) it pushed the International Skating Union to create a female division for the 1908 Games. Syers went on to win the gold in ladies singles and the bronze in pairs (along with her husband and partner).
