Gisèle Freund. The only woman to work for Magnum, the cooperative photography agency founded in 1947 by Henri Cartier Bresson and others. Freund was born near Berlin, 1908. An accomplished photojournalist, she became known for her portraits of  James Joyce, T.S. Ella Maillart, Isabelle Lévy-Lehmann  Ella Maillart was among the first Western travelers to visit the Caucasus at the beginning of the 1930’s. During her voyage in 1932 she crossed Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, ultimately finding herself at the Chinese frontier where she climbed to the summit of the Celestial Mountains, also known as Tien-shan.
