It’s like the ‘Belize desk’ at the State Department; an idea more than a place you actually sit at. ‘Ford’s writing at his desk.’ That could mean a lot of things. It could mean on an airplane or a Greyhound bus, or in a rental car or a rented house. It could mean in the Hotel L’Abbaye (though it would not mean at an outside table at the Deux Maggots). Like Emerson’s giant, I carry my desk with me.
