Amphiaros is renowned in ancient myth as a brave hero and was a gifted seer like his forebear Melampous. He was a hero of the war of the Seven against Thebes and realized that the expedition was doomed to disaster. On their way to Thebes the heroes instituted the Nemean games, and Amphiaraus won the victory in the chariot-race and in discus throwing.
