Aubrey Beardsley - 'Lysistrata', 1896. Beardsley often appropriated forms from continental pornography, but subverted them to present women as confident sexual subjects, not objects. This is echoed in his choice of subject material, as with Wilde's 'Salome' or this satirical play by Aristophanes. Beardsley was also a vocal personal and artistic champion of the independent 'New Woman' archetype which emerged in the late 19th Century and is explored in the work of Ibsen, James and others.
